Bimetals

  • What is a bimetal?

It is made by attaching two metal sheets which have different degrees of expansion and contraction according to temperature change, that is, thermal expansion coefficients. If temperature increases, the side with the higher thermal expansion coefficient expands faster and this makes the bimetal bend to the opposite side. If temperature decreases, it returns to the original state. For metals with a low thermal expansion coefficient, an alloy of Ni and Fe is used. For metals with a high thermal expansion coefficient, an alloy of Ni, Mn and Fe or Ni, Mo and Fe or Ni, Mn and Cu, etc. are commonly used.

It is possible to open or close a switch according to temperature by using its bending nature, and control a circuit by using the bimetal itself as a switch. In this case, however, contact operation should be made fast as a spark may occur when it separates from the contact, slowing temperature control.

  • Bimetal characteristics

Bimetal is generally a product made by rolling of attached alloy plates with different heat expansion coefficients, and a special metal which changes with a constant curvature if temperature change is applied to it.

Bimetal is widely used in a variety of fields like automatic temperature controllers in home appliances, indicators in automobiles, etc. for safety devices, miscellaneous controllers, and other industrial uses, and plays an important role in improving quality of life. This “bimetal” is used in a place where switch operations, adjustments and corrections are needed in the form of a plate or group where two (or more if necessary) alloys with different heat expansion rates are joined. It can also be used in appliances which are convenient and simple but require high reliability.
